We take over controller responsibilities: we prepare monthly management reports and analyses, support planning and assist management decision-making. We provide this support on a long-term basis if employing a full-time controller is not cost-effective for the company, and for a transitional period if the controller position is vacant or additional capacity is needed for a project.

For small companies, this is often the best solution instead of having an in-house controller, while at medium-sized companies it reduces the workload of existing controllers so they can devote their time to analysis.

When should you choose our Outsourced and Interim Controller service?

  • The company is not yet large enough to justify hiring a full-time controller, but management already needs regular, reliable reports and analyses.
  • The controller has left or will be absent for an extended period, and monthly reports and analyses still need to be prepared.
  • Existing controllers are occupied with the monthly closing and report preparation, but hiring an additional employee is not justified.
  • Additional controller capacity is needed for a planned transaction, due diligence process or system replacement.

In these situations, entrusting controller responsibilities to us can be a flexible solution: on a long-term basis or for a transitional period.

Outsourced or interim?

We undertake controller responsibilities in two forms: on a long-term basis as an outsourced controller, or temporarily as an interim controller.

Outsourced controller Interim controller
When is it worthwhile? If hiring a full-time controller is not worthwhile or not yet timely, or if permanent additional capacity is needed alongside the existing controllers If the controller position is temporarily vacant, or additional capacity is needed for the duration of a project
Time horizon Long-term, ongoing cooperation Temporary: typically until the new controller arrives or the project ends
Way of working Regular work following the monthly close and the reporting calendar For a vacant position, we take on the role of the controller; for a project, we work alongside the existing team, with a pre-agreed presence

What does our Outsourced and Interim Controller service include?

We tailor the scope of responsibilities to the company’s needs. Typically:

  • preparing monthly management reports and analysing budget-to-actual variances;
  • preparing the annual business plan and forecasts;
  • planning and monitoring cash flow;
  • contribution margin analyses by product, customer and business unit;
  • maintaining the key performance indicator (KPI) framework;
  • ad hoc analyses at management’s request;
  • preparing reports for owners and the parent company.

If the company does not yet have a well-functioning reporting system, we also implement our Power BI-based management reporting system and, if required, undertake its operation as well.

How do we work?

  • Assessment. We familiarise ourselves with the company’s operations, accounting and reporting processes, and management’s information needs.
  • Scope of responsibilities and schedule. Together, we specify which reports and analyses will be prepared, their deadlines and who the company’s contact person will be.
  • Ongoing work. We prepare reports and analyses and hold regular discussions with management.
  • Handover. For interim engagements, at the end of the period we hand over the responsibilities to the company’s controller together with the documentation, and train the new controller if one joins.

Why Grant Thornton?

  • Experience from more than 150 due diligence projects. Our colleagues have backgrounds in auditing, transaction advisory and controlling. In recent years, we have completed more than 150 financial due diligence projects, mostly at SMEs, so we know where management figures tend to be incomplete or inaccurate.
  • A dedicated controller, backed by a team. You work with a regular controller, with cover provided by our team when needed, ensuring that work continues during holidays or sick leave.
  • Flexible capacity. You use as much controller capacity as your company needs and can expand it as your company grows.
  • System-independent work. We work with data from any existing system or spreadsheet, including multiple sources at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

How does a controller’s work differ from bookkeeping?

The bookkeeper maintains the accounting records. The controller uses these and other data to prepare reports, analyses and plans for management and helps interpret the figures.

How much does it cost?

We prepare our proposal based on the scope of responsibilities and the capacity required. Pricing is flexible: for regular work, we agree on a monthly fee or daily rate, while one-off, individual tasks can also be charged at an hourly rate.

How quickly can the controller start work?

In most cases, the controller can start immediately. Beforehand, however, we always discuss exactly which responsibilities you would like to hand over.

Does the controller work on site or remotely?

We primarily work remotely, but if required, the controller also works on site at your company.

How long do we need to commit for?

There is no minimum contract term: we flexibly tailor the duration of our cooperation to your needs.

What happens if we later hire our own controller?

We hand over the responsibilities together with the documentation and, if required, train your new controller. If we also built the reporting system, we can continue to help operate it.
