We replace monthly reporting based on manual Excel work with a unified, automatically updated Power BI system. Management and owners receive the monthly reporting package in one place, on time and with figures reconciled to the trial balance. No new enterprise resource planning system is required.

We recommend our service to small and medium-sized enterprises where monthly management reports are currently prepared manually, and where owners and financial managers want to make decisions faster, based on more reliable figures.

When should you choose our Management Reporting for SMEs service?

  • Monthly management reports are prepared through manual Excel work, copying and combining data from multiple sources.
  • By the time the report is ready, the figures are already out of date, and two reports show two different results.
  • It is unclear how much each product, customer or business unit generates.
  • The budget-to-actual comparison is too broad to serve as a basis for decisions.
  • The controller’s time is spent producing data rather than analysing it.

Experience from more than 150 financial due diligence projects shows that the root cause of such problems is almost always the same: the absence of a controlling function, an appropriate data structure and a reporting system built on it.

What does our Management Reporting for SMEs service include?

  • Monthly reporting package in Power BI: jointly selected management reports, with drill-down to the details and Excel export.
  • Unified data model: every report calculates from the same model, ensuring that the figures are consistent everywhere.
  • Automatic refresh: data comes from existing sources, without manual copying.
  • Access management: everyone sees only the data relevant to them.
  • Documentation and handover workshop: so that your team can use the system independently.
  • Joint first closing and roadmap: we carry out the first live monthly closing together.

How do we work?

We reach live operation in four steps, typically within 11 weeks of the project launch.

  • Preparation (weeks 1–2). Together, we define which reports and indicators are needed. Deliverables: a report catalogue, a list of indicators and an approved specification.
  • Connecting data sources (weeks 2–5). We assess and connect the existing data sources and cleanse the loaded data. Deliverables: connected sources, organised and cleansed data.
  • Implementation (weeks 4–9). We build the data model and reports, which we make available through the Power BI service. Deliverable: a completed reporting package.
  • Testing and handover (weeks 9–11). Joint testing, a handover workshop and documentation; we carry out the first live monthly closing together. Deliverables: a tested system and a roadmap for the next steps.

Why Grant Thornton?

  • Built by finance professionals. Our colleagues are primarily finance professionals with experience in auditing, transaction advisory and controlling, rather than software developers. They have seen the financial operations of many companies from the inside, so they know what a well-functioning reporting system looks like and where figures tend to go wrong.
  • We build on existing data. There is no need for a new enterprise resource planning system; we work with data from your current systems and spreadsheets.
  • Fixed fee, no advance payment. We invoice the fee in instalments, linked to the deliverables handed over.
  • Senior team. The experts named in the proposal carry the project through to handover.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to implement a new enterprise resource planning system?

Not for this solution. We build on data from your existing systems and spreadsheets, such as your accounting software, time-tracking system or existing Excel spreadsheets. We do not replace source systems.

How much does it cost?

We provide a fixed-fee proposal, broken down by step, based on the scope of reports and data sources. We do not request an advance payment: we invoice the fee in instalments, linked to the deliverables handed over. The fixed fee applies to the scope specified in the proposal; work beyond this is charged at an hourly rate, based on a prior estimate.

Who bears the cost of Power BI licences?

Your company bears the cost of Power BI licences (EUR 12.1 per person per month); this is not included in our fee.

How much work does this involve for our team?

We carry out the development. Your responsibilities are:

  • appointing a project owner;
  • deciding on the definitions of indicators;
  • providing feedback on the deliverables handed over;
  • ensuring the involvement of data owners and correcting source data;
  • participating in joint testing and the 2–4-hour handover workshop.

What happens if our data is disorganised?

In the second step, we assess the data sources specified in the proposal and organise and cleanse the loaded data. We flag anything that can only be corrected in the source system; in such cases, making the correction is your responsibility.

Who can see what in the reports?

We publish the reports in the Power BI online service, with row-level security. This ensures that everyone sees only the data relevant to them.

What happens after handover?

We carry out the first live monthly closing together as part of the project. After handover, we provide a monthly support allowance upon request. Further developments are implemented in additional phases, based on a separate proposal.
